What Is the ICC World Test Championship?
The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) was introduced by the International Cricket Council to give context and meaning to bilateral Test series. Rather than simply playing Test series without consequence, each result now contributes points towards a global championship table, culminating in a final at a neutral venue between the top two ranked nations.
The 2025–2027 WTC Cycle
Following the 2023–2025 WTC Final (held at Lord's in June 2025), a fresh two-year cycle begins. The new cycle runs through to 2027 and will feature all Full Member nations of the ICC playing a pre-determined schedule of Test series.
Key Dates
- Cycle Begins: Mid-2025 following the WTC Final
- Cycle Ends: Early 2027
- WTC Final 2027: Scheduled for June 2027 at a to-be-announced venue
How the Points System Works
The WTC uses a Percentage of Points (PCT) system to rank teams fairly, accounting for the fact that not all teams play the same number of matches:
- Win: 12 points
- Draw: 4 points
- Tie: 6 points
- Loss: 0 points
Each team's PCT is calculated as: (Points Earned ÷ Maximum Points Available) × 100. This percentage determines the table standings, ensuring a team that wins 4 out of 5 series is ranked appropriately against one that wins 3 out of 4.
Deductions for Slow Over Rates
One important ICC regulation: teams that bowl their overs too slowly face point deductions. This encourages competitive play and prevents teams from tactically slowing the game. Repeated violations in a series can cost a side crucial PCT points.
Which Teams Are Involved?
All 12 Full ICC Member nations participate:
- India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Ireland
However, in practice, nations like Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan play fewer Test matches and have less impact on the overall standings.
India's Path to the WTC Final
India has featured in two WTC Finals (2021 and 2023). For the 2025–2027 cycle, India's schedule includes high-stakes series against England (home), Australia (away), South Africa, and others. Key factors that will determine India's fortunes:
- Home Series Wins: India's home record is exceptional and must be maintained.
- Away Performance: Historically, India's away wins in SENA countries have been the tipping factor.
- Over Rate Discipline: Avoiding point deductions will be crucial in a tightly contested table.
- Key Player Fitness: Bumrah, Kohli, and Rohit's availability across a full two-year cycle will be central.
Why the WTC Matters for Test Cricket
The WTC has successfully revived interest in Test cricket by adding stakes to every session, every delivery, and every series. For fans, it provides a reason to follow series beyond the two competing nations. For players, it gives a clear goal — a world championship — that motivates excellence over the gruelling two-year grind of Test cricket.
